Liposuction Has Major Benefits Beyond Beauty

October 28th, 2014

By lowering dangerously high triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts, undergoing liposuction can have a variety of healthy side effects. Possible health benefits following the procedure include reduced risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

“High triglyceride levels are known to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease,” noted researcher Eric Swanson. “The decrease in these levels after liposuction was surprisingly dramatic, and revealed that the permanent removal of excess fat cells by liposuction has a major impact on circulating levels of triglycerides.”

Swanson conducted a study of 322 patients undergoing liposuction and/or a tummy tuck, with 71 percent having only liposuction. Among patients with normal triglyceride levels before surgery, there was no noticeable change. However, a dramatic reduction — an average of 43 percent — was achieved by patients who had dangerously high levels prior to undergoing the procedure. Liposuction surgery proved to be nearly twice as effective as a common triglyceride-reducing prescription drug.

According to Swanson, who shared his findings with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons: “These findings suggest that patients who are considering liposuction who have at-risk triglyceride levels may reduce their risk of developing these serious health problems, while correcting body disproportions. Patients not only look better, but may be healthier too.”

Regarding white blood cell counts, the research showed liposuction to be successful in decreasing them by an average of 11 percent, thus lowering inflammation, which is thought to cause coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

Despite exercise and a healthy diet, stubborn areas of fatty tissue can remain. Ideal candidates for liposuction are physically healthy and less than 25 pounds overweight.

Breast Surgery Leads To More-Satisfying Sex Life, Poll Shows

October 13th, 2014

Women who have their breasts surgically enhanced are noticing a wonderful side effect: better sex!

Among breast implant and breast lift patients responding to a survey, a whopping 70 percent said their overall sex life satisfaction improved after the procedure, with 28 percent reporting that, based on a 1-to-10 scale, their sex life scores shot up by four points or more. The poll’s participants claimed a 34 percent increase in overall sex life satisfaction on average, and also claimed to have more sex post-procedure.

The poll by RealSelf.com, an online community focused on cosmetic surgery, found that 61 percent of women claimed they had sex more frequently after their breast enhancement surgery. The average pre-procedure sex life satisfaction score was 6.07, and the average post-procedure sex life scored jumped to 8.13.

The poll echoes the results of an earlier study by a University of Florida nurse researcher, who reported that women who undergo breast enlargement usually see a significant boost in self-esteem and positive feelings about their sexuality.

Cynthia Figueroa-Haas surveyed 84 women, aged 21 to 57 years old, assessing their perceptions before and two to three months after they had cosmetic breast augmentation.
Using the 30-point Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the participants’ average score increased from 20.7 to 24.9. And on the Female Sexual Function Index — which assesses sexual arousal, satisfaction, experience and attitudes — the average patient’s score increased from 27.2 to 31.4 on the 36-point index. After the procedure, ratings of sexual desire increased 78.6 percent, arousal scores jumped 81 percent and satisfaction ratings improved 57 percent.

August 22nd, 2014

Kelly Ripa certainly appears younger than her 43 years. Her bright appearance and bubbly personality earned her the coveted spot as host on the wildly popular morning show now called “Live! With Kelly and Michael.”

And she has been open to sharing her beauty tips with fans. On a recent episode of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” Ripa revealed her #1 secret is Botox. [Watch the video here.]

“Botox has changed my life,” she shared. “It’s cut my getting ready time in half.”

Ripa explained that she gets the treatment about every seven months, and it’s also benefitting her “Live!” beauty team. “Suddenly my eyelids are no longer resting on my eyelashes,” she said. “So I feel like it makes my makeup artist’s life easier, and it makes my eyes look a little more open on TV, which is where I happen to work right now.”

The hosts of “Watch What Happens” seemed surprised by her honesty and said they never suspected that she uses Botox. Ripa said she always strives for a natural appearance: “I think the key with anything is knowing what you look like and being a minimalist.”

Wisconsin plastic surgeon Dr. Clifford King offers a wide range of both surgical and non-invasive procedures, including Botox, at his Madison-area practice.

Madison Cosmetic Surgery can give you the glowing, rejuvenated appearance you desire with Botox, Restylane, microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

Weight Loss Much More Successful When Gastric Bypass Is Followed By Tummy Tuck

August 1st, 2014

Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight after bariatric surgery are more likely to stay slimmed down when their excess skin is removed, a study reports.
Published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the results show better long-term weight control in patients who have had body-contouring procedures.

Dr. Ali Modarressi and his colleagues at the University of Geneva in Switzerland believe their study shows that body contouring should be considered an essential part of successful bariatric surgery and should be covered by insurance plans. “Since plastic surgery after massive weight loss is mandatory for quality of life improvement and weight loss maintenance in many patients, body contouring must be considered a reconstructive surgery for those who have achieved massive weight loss,” the researchers said.

The study looked at the long-term weight outcomes of gastric-bypass patients, comparing 98 who had body-contouring procedures with 102 patients who did not.
Within two years after bariatric surgery, the patients lost an average of almost 100 pounds. Over time, the patients who had body contouring regained less weight: an average of just over 1 pound per year, compared with 4 pounds per year for patients who did not.
After accounting for the weight of excess skin removed, the average patient who had gastric bypass regained nearly 50 pounds, while those who also had body contouring regained an average of only 14 pounds.

Kate Hudson Gets Vocal In Support Of Cosmetic Procedures

July 7th, 2014

Golden Globe-winning actress Kate Hudson isn’t shy about sharing her support for cosmetic procedures.
In the July 2014 issue of InStyle magazine, Hudson points her finger at celebrity tabloids and gossip blogs, saying they unfairly criticize Hollywood personalities who have medically enhanced their appearance.

“Will everybody stop being so damned judgmental?” she says. “If someone wants to go get butt implants, then sure, go get butt implants. The real question is, How do they treat the person next to them? Are they a—holes or are they awesome?”
Hudson, who was also nominated for an Academy Award for her role in “Almost Famous,” also told the British magazine Hello! that she will consider getting Botox in the future.

“Why not? Right now, it’s not something I feel I need, but I think it’s great that it’s available,” the 35-year-old said. “I think there’s nothing wrong with a little ‘Boty call’ if you feel you want it.”
