Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia Gaining Popularity

September 2nd, 2016

You may not have heard of gynecomastia, but you have probably heard of man boobs or “moobs”. It’s a very troubling condition that causes breast tissue swelling in men and boys. That swelling is hard enough on a man’s sense of self, but gynecomastia is also often accompanied by pain and tenderness that makes it hard to engage in sports and other activities. Although the condition rarely causes any other health problems, it can severely impact self-esteem, which can negatively affect all other areas of a man’s life. The condition is so troublesome that male breast reduction surgeries account for 40 of all breast reductions worldwide.

After Male Breast Reduction Surgery, ‘I’m Going To Be A Lot Happier And More Confident’

December 14th, 2015

After having a male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery), a man has shared his story on Reddit.

Gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue) can occur at any age. It can be caused by hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or drug use. The writer says his breasts developed when he was a child. As a teen, he worked out at the gym in an attempt to shrink them. “I actually got pretty fit, and felt better about myself for a time. But there was no real ability to lose the fat on my chest,” he writes. “No matter how skinny I got or how I built up my chest I never looked really good.”

He tried to conceal them: “I would wear baggier clothes and hunch. And in the mirror I saw how it was hidden. I became an expert. And some people wouldn’t see it. Black became my favourite colour.”

Gynecomastia was negatively affecting his confidence. “I try to keep the lights off or keep my shirt on during sex. … I looked like crap in a dress shirt. I had to look for very boring, loose fitting clothing … I couldn’t put clothes on without hating myself. I couldn’t even look at my image in the mirror anymore. I burned with hate and disgust.”

He eventually looked into gynecomastia surgery. Male breast reduction surgery is recommended for men who are physically and emotionally healthy and do not consume anabolic steroids or smoke or drink alcohol in excess. Most patients can return to work in less than a week.

After the procedure, he says, “I lay on a table and suddenly awoke with a normal man’s chest. I’m sure now that I’m going to be a lot happier and more confident. It was a good decision.”

His before-and-after photos were published by Cosmopolitan.
