Body Treatments Heat Up for The Summer

June 26th, 2017

A lot of New Year’s resolutions involve getting in shape and getting “beach ready” for the summer months.

Since summer is now here, most people’s schedules become extremely hectic. This is the common phenomenon that occurs every year with patients scrambling in at the last minute to try to have some procedure performed to look their best for summer get-togethers and pool parties.

Since swim suit season is here, it is not unusual to notice those stubborn areas that have just not responded the way they should to all of those long, hard months of exercise and following a healthy lifestyle. Read the rest of this entry »

What You Need to Know About Liposuction

October 4th, 2016

Liposuction is still the number one requested cosmetic surgery in the United States. Developed back in 1982, this procedure gives new hope to thousands of patients who struggle to exercise and diet away unwanted patches of stubborn fat deposits like “love handles”, “saddle bags” and other problem areas. Although there have been several technical advances in liposuction surgery that impact the speed and efficiency at which we can remove excess fat, it remains a relatively simple body-sculpting procedure in which Dr. King skillfully suctions fat away from the target areas of the body in a systematic, safe manner. In fact, when done well, it even has several significant health benefits that go far beyond a sleeker profile. For the best outcome, however, it is very important for the patient to also understand liposuction, how it works, and what the risks and long-term benefits are.

Liposuction Healthy Side Effects

September 24th, 2015

Even though liposuction was long considered a purely cosmetic procedure, more recent research shows some positive side effects. Resulting health benefits might include lower triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts, which can significantly decrease a patient’s risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

The study, presented to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, looked at 322 patients undergoing liposuction and/or a tummy tuck, with 71 percent having only liposuction. Among patients with normal triglyceride levels before surgery, there was no noticeable change. However, those patients who had dangerously elevated levels prior to the procedure saw a dramatic reduction — an average of 43 percent. Liposuction surgery was nearly twice as effective as a common triglyceride-reducing prescription drug.

“High triglyceride levels are known to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The decrease in these levels after liposuction was surprisingly dramatic, and revealed that the permanent removal of excess fat cells by liposuction has a major impact on circulating levels of triglycerides,” said the study’s author, Dr. Eric Swanson.

“These findings suggest that patients who are considering liposuction who have at-risk triglyceride levels may reduce their risk of developing these serious health problems, while correcting body disproportions. Patients not only look better, but may be healthier too.”

On the matter of white blood cell counts, the research showed liposuction decreased it by an average of 11 percent, thus lowering inflammation, which is thought to cause coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

“For years, it has been assumed that ‘visceral fat’ surrounding the internal organs has greater metabolic importance and is more directly linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk than ‘subcutaneous fat’ that lies under the skin,” Dr. Swanson noted. “These new findings support recent studies suggesting subcutaneous fat, which can be reduced by liposuction, is just as metabolically important.”

Liposuction can be an excellent option for patients who have a stable weight, but some problem areas that are not responding to diet and exercise. Liposuction Has Major Benefits Beyond Beauty

October 28th, 2014

By lowering dangerously high triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts, undergoing liposuction can have a variety of healthy side effects. Possible health benefits following the procedure include reduced risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

“High triglyceride levels are known to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease,” noted researcher Eric Swanson. “The decrease in these levels after liposuction was surprisingly dramatic, and revealed that the permanent removal of excess fat cells by liposuction has a major impact on circulating levels of triglycerides.”

Swanson conducted a study of 322 patients undergoing liposuction and/or a tummy tuck, with 71 percent having only liposuction. Among patients with normal triglyceride levels before surgery, there was no noticeable change. However, a dramatic reduction — an average of 43 percent — was achieved by patients who had dangerously high levels prior to undergoing the procedure. Liposuction surgery proved to be nearly twice as effective as a common triglyceride-reducing prescription drug.

According to Swanson, who shared his findings with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons: “These findings suggest that patients who are considering liposuction who have at-risk triglyceride levels may reduce their risk of developing these serious health problems, while correcting body disproportions. Patients not only look better, but may be healthier too.”

Regarding white blood cell counts, the research showed liposuction to be successful in decreasing them by an average of 11 percent, thus lowering inflammation, which is thought to cause coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

Despite exercise and a healthy diet, stubborn areas of fatty tissue can remain. Ideal candidates for liposuction are physically healthy and less than 25 pounds overweight.
