Body Treatments Heat Up for The Summer

June 26th, 2017

A lot of New Year’s resolutions involve getting in shape and getting “beach ready” for the summer months.

Since summer is now here, most people’s schedules become extremely hectic. This is the common phenomenon that occurs every year with patients scrambling in at the last minute to try to have some procedure performed to look their best for summer get-togethers and pool parties.

Since swim suit season is here, it is not unusual to notice those stubborn areas that have just not responded the way they should to all of those long, hard months of exercise and following a healthy lifestyle.

For many people who exercise regularly and maintain a balanced diet, fat remains a problem. Sometimes, stubborn deposits of fatty tissue resist even the strictest health regimens. To treat such problems, we offer several body altering procedures to help you achieve the best you.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Clifford King, M.D., Ph.D., and our certified surgical suite lead the region in terms of excellence, and we stress patient education and comfort throughout our treatment process. Our practice is extremely committed to the highest most professional standards in patient care and to patient satisfaction.

Here are some body treatments to help you look your best this summer.

Liposuction

Liposuction is still the number one requested cosmetic surgery in the United States and a popular option at our Madison, Wisconsin cosmetic surgery practice. Developed back in 1982, this procedure gives new hope to thousands of patients who struggle to exercise and diet away unwanted patches of stubborn fat deposits like “love handles,” “saddle bags,” and other problem areas.

Although there have been several technical advances in liposuction surgery that impact the speed and efficiency at which we can remove excess fat, it remains a relatively simple body-sculpting procedure in which Dr. King skillfully suctions fat away from the target areas of the body in a systematic, safe manner. In fact, when done well, it even has several significant health benefits that go far beyond a sleeker profile. For the best outcome, however, it is very important for the patient to also understand liposuction, how it works, and what the risks and long-term benefits are.

Liposuction is the removal of fat from specific areas of the body. It is performed via small incisions in which a cannula is introduced and fat aspirated. Ideal candidates for liposuction are less than 25 pounds overweight, physically healthy, and seeking to address problem areas of the body that have not responded to diet and exercise.

Because liposuction is a procedure that subtly reshapes the contours of the body, it is an excellent solution for those with isolated pockets of fat in the stomach, legs, arms, chin, buttocks, neck, or ankles.

To give you the healthy looking, beautifully contoured body you desire, we proudly offer liposuction at our Madison, Wisconsin cosmetic surgery practice. At your initial, low-pressure consultation, Dr. Clifford King will advise you of your options and help you to develop realistic goals.

As part of your fully customized treatment plan, Dr. King can combine and modify procedures to help you achieve your desired body shape. Above all else, Dr. King and his staff want to make your experience with body sculpting surgery as comfortable and successful as possible.

There are various forms of liposuction including suction-assisted, ultrasound-assisted and laser. This will usually be determined by your plastic surgeon following consultation and examination of the area of concern. While liposuction removes the fat, it alone does not address excess skin. It is, therefore, important to have good skin quality and a firm tone without excess prior to surgery. The success of the procedure will depend on your own skin’s ability to contract or tighten after the fat is removed.

Liposuction is also frequently combined with other excisional procedures in which skin and fat are removed, for example, an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

Tummy Tuck

The stomach or “tummy” can be a very sensual feature of the body. When the tummy carries excess fatty tissue and skin it can bulge and look less attractive. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), available at our Madison, Wisconsin cosmetic surgery practice is an excellent option for reducing excess stomach tissue and reshaping stomach contours.

A tummy tuck creates improved abdominal contours by:

  • Creating a tightened abdominal wall appearance
  • Removing excess fat in the mid and lower abdomen
  • Removing excess skin in the mid and lower abdomen
  • Tightening skin that has lost elasticity

When performing a tummy tuck, Madison plastic surgeon Dr. King utilizes his extensive experience and skill to redefine the abdominal contours. During the surgery, usually done while the patient is under general anesthesia, Dr. King makes an incision that varies in length depending on the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Dr. King tightens the abdominal muscles through the incision and secures them with sutures.

The excess skin is then removed and remaining tissue is stretched downward to create a tighter, more defined stomach. Additionally, tummy tuck patients at our practice may find that combining abdominoplasty with other cosmetic surgery options such as breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift, can create a more comprehensive transformation.

Body Lift

Individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight often find that their skin does not have enough elasticity to fit the contours of their slimmer physique, especially in the summer when hanging out at BBQs and the beach. Excess skin can hang or create bulges on the body, detracting from the positive results of weight loss.

With precise lower body lift, arm lift, and thigh lift procedures, performed at our Madison, Wisconsin cosmetic surgery practice, Clifford King, M.D., Ph.D. can dramatically reduce sagging skin caused by significant weight loss.

Individuals who have achieved massive weight loss – typically because of bariatric surgery – frequently find that the ability to fully enjoy one’s new figure is diminished due to large folds of draping, loose skin. After years of being stretched, the skin’s elasticity and ability to shrink to fit the body’s new shape is reduced, and diet and exercise do not effectively improve this condition.

Surgery is the only way to tighten excess skin and give the body a firm appearance. Dr. King strives to help each patient achieve his or her personal appearance goals. Additionally, our practice offers many non-surgical services including BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane®, chemical peels, and more.

Thigh Lift

Patients who have undergone successful weight loss are also often left with unwanted hanging skin in the medial thigh area. A medial thigh lift can correct this condition by removing skin and excess tissue from the inner thigh. With artful and skillful methods, Dr. King can help patients achieve thighs that look more youthful and toned.

During the medial thigh lift procedure, excess skin and fat are removed from the inner thigh area. Underlying muscles are tightened to better support the thigh and create a more toned appearance. Incisions are made in the groin area where they remain discreetly hidden following surgery. The medial thigh lift is frequently combined with either liposuction or abdominoplasty at our Madison, Wisconsin, cosmetic surgery practice to achieve comprehensive body sculpting results.

After Care

Following surgery, it is not uncommon to be given a compression garment to wear. This will help minimize swelling and help shape your body to its new contour. The length of time required to wear these garments will be determined by Dr. King. It is important to remember that final results of this surgery are not immediate. It can take 6 months to a year for all the swelling to resolve, skin to contract and for your final results to be apparent.

It is important to remember that liposuction, tummy tuck, and other procedures are not substitute for weight loss or a treatment for obesity and appropriate patients should be within a normal weight range for their age and height. Additionally, good candidate for surgery should also live a healthy lifestyle with well-controlled medical problems, if any.

As with any surgery, it is important to have a consultation and evaluation by a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. King who is equipped to answer any questions you have and determine whether this is the right procedure for you to provide you with the best possible results.

No one likes struggling with those stubborn problem areas or feeling run down and stressed. Making smarter decisions is your first step to gaining confidence and getting your body summer ready.

Start with getting the right amount of sleep, choose healthy foods as often as possible, and get out and move. Unfortunately, most of the time, diet and exercise cannot battle factors like aging, sun damage, cellulite, genetics, extreme weight loss, and pregnancy, and that’s where we can help!

If you would like to find out more about Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Body Lift, or Thigh Lift, schedule a consultation at our Madison cosmetic surgery practice. Dr. King would be pleased to meet with you and discuss your personal goals and treatment options.
