Chin Up: Botox Can Make You Feel Better Too, Studies Suggest

June 11th, 2014

Is your appearance making you grumpy? Could changing your face also change your mood?

Two recent studies support the facial feedback hypothesis, that a person’s expression directly influences their mood. Using Botox to relax the facial muscles that produce unhappy expressions can help alleviate depression, research shows.

“There are several nerves, about 12 of them, that go straight into the brain through the skull,” psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal told the Washington Post.

His study with physician Eric Finzi, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, gathered 33 patients who met criteria for major depression. In the group, 17 of the subjects who received Botox injections showed at least a 50 percent improvement score in their depression symptoms.

The study proves Botox can be an effective supplement or alternative to anti-depressants and psychotherapy for treating depression, Rosenthal said. Botox, which doesn’t enter the bloodstream, has no known side effects.

Another trial, presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in New York last month, also showed Botox injections to be effective in relieving clinical depression.

German researchers gave 30 patients — with both observable frowns and an insufficient response to standard treatments for depression — either Botox injections or saline injections (placebo group). After six weeks, depression indicators for the Botox patients dropped by an average of 47 percent, compared with 9 percent for placebo patients.

Breast Lifts Becoming Much More Popular

June 2nd, 2014

New statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that breast lifts have become significantly more popular in the United States since the year 2000.

The 70 percent increase — with more than 90,000 mastopexy procedures performed in 2013 by ASPS member surgeons — means lifts are increasing at twice the rate of breast-implant surgeries.

The most-common cosmetic surgery in the U.S. is still breast implants, with more than 290,000 people undergoing the procedure last year.

“Many women are looking for a youthful breast by using the tissue they already have,” said ASPS President Dr. Robert X. Murphy Jr. “The ideal candidate for a breast lift is a woman who has a good amount of breast tissue left, who doesn’t necessarily want to have implants. Many women aren’t sure if they are a candidate for this type of surgery, but a simple pencil test can tell them if they are.”

The pencil test involves placing a pencil under the breast: “If the breast tissue holds the pencil in place against the chest, that implies that there’s a hanging nature to the breast that can be fixed with a lift,” Murphy explained.

At Madison Cosmetic Surgery in Wisconsin, Dr. Clifford King restores firmness to sagging breasts. Pregnancy, change in body weight and aging all can result in breasts losing their original shape and elasticity. Through a breast lift procedure with Dr. King, patients can achieve a firmer, more youthful, natural-looking figure.

For details on the procedure — including combining breast lift surgery with breast augmentation, using the procedure to create symmetry between the breasts, and concentric mastopexy (a less-invasive procedure for patients with smaller breasts and minor sagging) — please visit our breast lift page.

Top Mommy Makeovers In Madison Wisconsin

Pregnancy may lead to permanent and unavoidable changes of the abdomen, the
hips, and the breasts. The abdominal wall is stretched with pregnancy. This stretching
may lead to extra skin of the abdominal wall, or to a weakening of the abdominal
muscles. Diet and exercise alone will often not eliminate this excess abdominal skin.

The only remedy in many cases is a surgical removal of this skin. The removal of this
skin is accomplished by an tummy tuck (abdominoplasty ) procedure. The
abdominoplasty can also tighten and repair any muscle damage caused by pregnancy.
Liposuction is used when there is an area of fatty deposition which cannot be altered by
diet and exercise. Liposuction can improve the appearance of the waist, back, outer
thighs, inner thighs and knees.

Finally, the shape and the size of the breast is another area often changed by pregnancy. The nipple may be lower on the breast, or the breast
may lose its fullness with excess skin. This is especially true following breast feeding.
Improvement of the breast can be achieved by either a lift, or an implant, or both. Many
of the post-pregnancy changes that mothers dislike can be improved. A return to the
pre-baby body is possible. The above mentioned procedures, along with proper diet and
exercise, make it possible.

Breast Lift Blog

I see a wide variety of patients that ask for breast improvement in my practice. Most patients simply want to fill out a bra better, or have a more acceptable appearance. The best way to achieve this goal varies in different patients. Many patients can add volume and fullness to their breast by an implant alone.

However, some patients with redundant breast skin, may require a breast lift. The medical term for a breast lift is a mastopexy. A mastopexy lifts the nipple into the right position, and tightens any loose breast skin. This creates a more youthful appearing breast. An implant may be combined with a mastopexy when a patient is looking for both an increase in breast fullness and an improvement in nipple position. Some patients are very large breasted, and benefit from a breast reduction. Often, they complain of neck, back and shoulder pain. A breast reduction may be covered by insurance.

Patients who present with a congenital breast asymmetry may require a different procedures on each breast. Even though every patients’ situation is quite unique, the outcome of surgery is typically an increase in comfort and confidence.
