It’s All About the Nose for Younger Patients

August 12th, 2015

Young men and women are taking advantage of the opportunity to feel better about their looks, with the shape of their nose being an important part of that. For cosmetic surgery patients under age 35, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) was the most popular procedure they chose last year.

As one plastic surgeon said, “Even a minor correction to the nose can make a huge improvement in facial harmony.”

Rhinoplasty can fix: nose size in relation to facial balance; nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils; nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge; nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked; nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned; and nasal asymmetry.

Beyond just altering the proportions of your nose, rhinoplasty can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose, such as a deviated septum. Your surgeon will adjust the nasal structure to produce better alignment.

Patients often request their new nose resemble that of a favorite celebrity. The most popular noses? For men, it’s George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. And, for women, Nicole Kidman, Kate Middleton and Halle Berry.

For rhinoplasty in Madison, Wisconsin, you can trust the experience of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Clifford King.

Plastic Surgery Statistics [Part 2]: Minimally Invasive Procedures Increase Too

July 29th, 2015

In 2014, the number of cosmetic procedures in the United States, including both minimally invasive and surgical, topped 15 million, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures increased by 4 percent, with more than 13.9 million procedures in the country last year.

The top five minimally invasive procedures were:

* Botox (6.7 million procedures, up 6 percent)
* Soft tissue fillers (2.3 million procedures, up 3 percent)
* Chemical peel (1.2 million procedures, up 7 percent)
* Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures, up 3 percent)
* Microdermabrasion (881,905 procedures, down 9 percent)

“Subtlety has been the keyword I’ve heard from patients over the past year,” said ASPS President Dr. Scot Glasberg. “Minimally invasive procedures typically produce subtle aesthetic results, and for many people, that is all they want or need at the time.”

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Clifford King offers a variety of non-surgical treatments in Madison, Wisconsin, including Botox, microdermabrasion, Restylane, chemical peels and Obagi professional skin care products.

2014 Plastic Surgery Statistics: Cosmetic Procedures Rise Again

June 4th, 2015

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released its 2014 plastic surgery statistics, showing that 15.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed last year in the U.S.

“The demand for plastic surgery continues to grow as medical advancements are made and technology improves, resulting in a wider array of options for patients,” said ASPS President Dr. Scot Glasberg.

“Today, more than ever, patients are empowered with choices to achieve the results they are seeking. Through open communication and a mutual understanding of expectations, patients work closely with their surgeon to determine the procedures most appropriate for them to achieve their optimal outcomes.”
Cosmetic surgical procedures rose 1 percent, to nearly 1.7 million procedures in 2014. The top five surgical procedures were:

* Breast augmentation
* Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Should You Reveal Your Past Surgery?

April 13th, 2015

If you’ve decided to improve your appearance with cosmetic surgery, the decision was no doubt a very personal one. And, who you choose to share the information with is also very personal. When beginning a new relationship, you might feel conflicted over whether or not to reveal your past surgery.

Legendary columnist Dear Abby advised a reader on this very issue. The woman, who has breast implants, was feeling conflicted, so she wrote in for help:

“DEAR ABBY: I have been dating a wonderful man for two years and am in hopes of getting a proposal soon. We are both committed to staying pure before marriage and have not been intimate. My question to you is, do I have to tell him, now or ever, that I have had breast implants? I did it several years ago, and it greatly improved my self-esteem. I’m glad I did it. Since he has never felt any breasts, if I tell him, my fear is he will get hung up on the thought, “I wonder what real breasts feel like.” On the other hand, if I don’t tell him and sometime in the future he finds out, he may be like, “I can’t believe you kept that from me.” What would you advise? — Reticent in Kentucky

DEAR RETICENT: Many women have breast enhancement surgery so their figures will be more balanced. For the reason you have mentioned, you should tell your boyfriend. It should make no difference to him. However, if it does, it’s better that you know now before you spend any more time on someone who measures the worth of a woman by how “real” her breasts are. P.S. If he wants to know what “real” breasts feel like, tell him to go hug his mother.”

Olympic Gold Medal Winner Thrilled With Her New Nose After Rhinoplasty

March 27th, 2015

A year after her second rhinoplasty (a.k.a. “nose job”) surgery, Olympic gold medal winner Stephanie Rice is still talking about how dramatically the procedure has improved her life.
“Seeing the better version of my nose made me realize how much it had been affecting me,” Rice says.

The swimmer, now 26, had broken her nose in a pool accident about 10 years earlier. The injury flattened the bridge of her nose, causing sinus issues — and a drop in her self-confidence. “My family and friends would say it was fine, but random people would comment,” she shared.
Rice was sure she wanted to have it fixed, but had to wait until she could coordinate her recovery time with her training schedule: “It was always something I knew I would do. It was not a question of if, but of when.”

Prior to breaking her nose, Rice says, she never had an issue with the way it looked. Her first rhinoplasty helped some of her medical issues, but a second procedure was needed to repair ongoing sinusitis problems, reduced airflow and a deviated septum. That treatment was also cosmetic. “I love the way my nose looks now, and I can finally breathe,” she says.

See Stephanie Rice’s rhinoplasty before and after photos here.

Despite the advice of her family and friends to keep the surgery a secret, Rice says she’s very happy she shared the news with her fans, who’ve overwhelmed her with their support.

“I’m so glad I didn’t keep it hush hush and rather owned my decision, one because there is no better feeling than owning your decisions and feeling empowered, and two because speaking out about it has allowed me to guide others who are in the same position I was.

“It’s not easy to open up about personal things but I would hope that my candidness helps someone else in some way,” she says.
