The Importance of Board Certification

May 14th, 2013

It is important to find a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).The process of board certification by this organization is quite rigorous and extensive.

First, in order to gain entrance into a certified plastic surgery training program, one must show a high level of clinical and academic performance. Typically, a plastic surgery training program is six to eight years in duration following medical school. During this time, the resident learns from attending didactic conferences, and the resident participates in the operating room. After completion of this extensive training, the resident is considered Board Eligible. Passing a written exam and then an oral exam is necessary to become Board Certified. Recertification is is important, and is usually done on a regular basis.

In order to maintain board certification, a plastic surgeon is required to participate in a minimal number of educational
conferences and events. A patient considering plastic surgery should seek a board certified plastic surgeon. This should be the first step in identifying a doctor who is best trained in the field, and will further ensure a great outcome from any surgical procedure.
